The Bermuda Depths

(This poster is framed and hanging on the wall of my living room!)
Criminally unavailable on DVD, this film that haunted me like no other needs to be re-released pronto.
There is a large portion of the my generation that has seen this film but went for years wondering if they had really seen it and what the heck it was really all about.
Part love story, part horror movie, part esoteric fairy tale, if you caught this movie on television in 1978, chances are it stuck with you for years while you tried to figure out what it all meant.
The story (from makers of those ultra cute Christmas specials, Rankin & Bass) is a simple tale of a young man who returns to his boyhood home in Bermuda searching for answers about a young girl named Jenny and the large turtle she was strangely close to.
For most of my adult life I couldn’t even remember the title of this film and wondered if I had actually seen it or if it had been a dream, as it seemed to be. My wife’s father and I had discussed this film many times and I started to search online for proof of its existence, which I found.
I had the chance to see it again a couple of times, and despite its low budget and dated feel, it is still one of the most beautiful and intoxicatingly strange films I have ever seen and the fans of this film deserve a beautiful DVD special edition of the Bermuda Depths.
Depths starred Connie Sellecca, Carl Weathers and Leigh McCloskey, all who turn in great performances.
The Bermuda Depths is easily one of the most interesting and fantastic films ever made and likely has one of the most noteworthy of cult followings, considering many of the fans of this film haven’t seen it since they were children.
There are endless online discussions on this film and petitions to have it released on DVD, though all have been ignored, but copies of it can be obtained though with compromised image and sound quality.
This film is proof of the artistic richness of the 1970’s (especially in TV movies,) and should be experienced by a new generation.
The Bermuda Depths is not only solely responsible for my love of the ocean and sea life, but for my love of gothic love stories. The magic of this one is that it is set in Bermuda and has a giant sea monster and a girl with glowing eyes.
