RISE – Blood Hunter

Wow! I have been hearing bad things about this movie for so long that I almost didn’t review it because I thought I might be wasting my time but I am so glad I didn’t make the mistake of listening to jaded critics because Rise – Blood Hunter was one of the most entertaining films I have seen in a long time.
Do you really need more than lesbian vampires, an often nude Lucy Liu, with more nudity from Cameron Richardson and Carla Cugino, a supporting role from The Shield’s Michael Chiklis (as a drunken detective), with cameos from Marilyn Manson & Nick Lachey?
Really, you need more than that?
Okay, how about a non-linear vampire tale that may not re-invent the genre but does manage to deliver one of the most delightfully entertaining low budget genre film to come along in a long time.
It used to be you could count on a never ending stream of these kinds of movies to end up on Cinemax late on a Friday night after short runs in the theaters but the ultra PC right wing war against fun has changed the world of low budget exploitation and brain-washed geeks into thinking movies like Rise aren’t as good as they are.
CGI and derivative PG-13 crap movies have robbed a generation of genre loving film buffs from appreciating delicious gems like Rise and I am here to remind you all that we love lesbian vampire movies and you don’t have to spend a lot of money to make them great!
Lucy Liu marks the best film of her career with Rise (aside from my ultimate guilty pleasures, the Charlie’s Angels movies) and she should make ten of these movies because I like watching her kick ass and be tough and I appreciate a very naked Lucy Liu.
No, this is not Citizen Kane and it isn’t even the Citizen Kane of lesbian vampire movies but it is a movie I am proud to own because I love vampire movies and I love vampire movies made by filmmakers who love vampire movies!
Michael Chiklis looks like he is going to blow an artery every time he delivers a line and the bit part players overact like they might not ever act again and the whole thing works fantastically.
Do not listen to those who will tell you that Rise isn’t a fun movie and don’t let them try to tell you it is bad movie making because though it does occasionally fall into the “so bad its good category”, it also falls into the “hey, this is actually really good for what it is” category and for that reason, you cannot miss it.
